Superman: Red Son
by Millar, Robinson, Wong, Mounts,
Lopez & Johnson
Description: The
premise is simple. What if Superman’s ship had landed in the 1930ish Ukraine
rather than 1930s Kansas? What if this American symbol wasn’t? Exchange the S
for a hammer and sickle. Further, make him really, truly, passionately
believe. Have him go from his collective farm to serve some Stalinist Russian
five year plan. And the more he tries, the more the super acts to save,
transform, create, the more he undermines.
This book works its way into your brain. Twists all the lore. Once
more young Bruce Wayne-vitch loses his parents, but this time they die in a
pogrom. Princess Diana with her crush. Green Lantern, well he has his issues. Lex Luthor playing a forty year
game of chess. Kal-El with his dreams. With none of them ever quite grasping.
The end of this graphic novel had my brain
ready to explode with cosmic, "I can't believe they just did that."
