And then there is Mount Rushmore at dawn. We weren’t quite the only ones there though. We saw a mama mountain goat and her baby and some deer. We saw the sun rise, pink and gold. The presidents, facing to the east, over the expanse of the prairie. Washington looks straight ahead, calm and practical, Jefferson looks up to the future, a visionary. Roosevelt is a little recessed but looks strong and resolute. Lincoln looks down, a little sad. It
was incredibly quiet and still. Calm. We walked around some of the trails
and looked up. We made this.
Well, the mini statue, they haven’t quite finished the monument yet. But the face is done and as long as they keep slogging at it, that’s all that matters. It's easy to see why this area is considered sacred. Even though the land is rugged it is full of life. We've seen so many incredible scenes of nature on this trip. Each one unique and breathtaking. The landscape changes from moment to moment and driving across you get a sense of how they all flow together. We drove around a curve into Wind Cave National Park and found huge rolling meadows full of prairie dogs and one buffalo. America the Beautiful. From there we crossed into Wyoming, where we visited Karen’s aunt Deb, had cake, and saw many prong horn antelope. Music
