Would it surprise you to know that we woke up at the crack of dawn.
Actually, pre-dawn. Pre-dawn in honor of the land of the giant cement dinosaurs. Okay, technically, Drumheller is an international heritage site because the local badlands are lousy with dinosaur bones. But I have to admit, the heart of me is equally charmed with the cement dinosaurs. In front of the post office, the super market and of course the tourist office.
But before cement dinosaurs, came the badlands.

Anyway, we headed off into the badlands on the Dinosaur Trail (North Loop). The scenery was magnificent. The hills and gullies were formed by the millennial passage of water flowing through the curving layers of different types of rocks and soil.

Once we crossed, we watched the sun rise over Horsethief Canyon. Watched antelope walk the canyon ridge. We passed a wee little church that sits but 6 people. Why they built it, I cannot say. I’m guessing to be cute.

Then back to town for a look at the cement dinosaurs and out across the vasty plains. Miles and miles of space. Sometimes farms.

There is something very modern art about fields of round hay bales. Positioned just so. Dark gold disks on a yellow canvas. Art of the useful.
