Got
up around 6:30, chatted with dad, read a 100 year old letter written by
my great grandmother, and set out on the day.
The countryside gave way to full on desert, until we crossed back over the Cascades (a set of mountains that we crossed just a few times), then back to lush forest and rain. Lots of rain. And a few government convoys. |

Not
far from Seattle, we stopped in the town of Roslyn, where they filmed Northern
Exposure. We wandered a bit. Looked at Ruth Ann’s shop. Looked at the Brick.
Felt scenic, then moved on.
Hmmm…how to explain. Once upon a time, Seattle had a tremendous plumbing problem. Basically, they didn’t have any. Also, the place was built on saw dust landfill. Think pot holes, 8 ft wide. Think fire hazard. Seattle burned down. No worries, no one died. However, the good city father’s decided to fix their problems by raising the level of the streets to a nice angle (all the better to lay pipes under). Up 10 ft, 20 ft, 30 ft, 40 ft. In the mean time, the good store owners had rebuilt to the regular height. Course now they were 10, 20, 30, 40 ft underground. So, they roofed it up and built an underground. Very funny tour. Very cool. After that we walked, saw Pike’s Market, saw a Victorian dress made from PVC, went up the Space Needle then headed out of town into lovely rush hour traffic. |
