Dad, Karen and I went for a drive over the Cascades. As we went over Chinook Pass, we encountered some construction work. The rule of a road trip. Have car travel, will see road construction.

And as we sat , we thought about roads. We’ve spent the last 100 years or so building this huge network of roads that go from everywhere to everywhere. Semi-trucks carry goods and cars carry families and people travel to all the places they have to go. Think about all the work that goes into maintaining that infrastructure.

On September 11, our planes may have been grounded, but the roads still stretched broad and wide and happily under constant maintenance. So, we waved and and resolved to thank every bit of construction that stopped our way.

And then we drove on down the other side of the pass into the Mount Rainier National Park and a lush new landscape. Lots of trees with ferny branches and dense underbrush. Sprinkling rain. And above it all, Mount Ranier. Cloud shrouded and of glaciated slopes.
