Feature - Hiking for Labyrinths
Looking for a hike that's a little out of the ordinary, then look no further
than Sibley Volcanic Preserve.
This
park offers rolling hills, wide trails, Volcanic uplifts and strolling down
turns. Each turn offers excellent vistas of the surrounding hills and bay.
But for Bay area residents spoiled by framing hills on all sides and the verdure
of the February green, this may be all so ho hum.
However, Sibley boasts a little something extra to those who are willing to hike
just a bit for it.
Located
in an abandoned quarry, a number of labyrinths have been constructed from loose
stone and the curving turf.
They come at the perfect point in the hike. After striding for about forty
minutes up a gentle hill, the labyrinths serve as a perfect spot to stop, rest,
and enjoy your exercise buzz.
In the winter, a pond/marsh forms off to one side and is the home of all sorts
of frogs and salamanders. Leave the dog on a leash, this is a protected area,
but pause to enjoy the serenity of briefly green hills and stones arranged by
mystery artists for your delectation.
Sibley can be reached off
of Skyline Boulevard north of Hwy 24, near the intersection with Grisly Peak
Boulevard.
