Keeping up
This last month, Lifeamgood received its first content request, a
comprehensive list of Conventions in the Bay Area. A request that sent me back
into the book of memory, when Karen and I started Lifeamgood.
It was 2000, our year of culture, i.e., we went to
plays, opera, ballet, events, and generally exhausted ourselves. We also began
writing Lifeamgood.
At the time, we wanted to create a comprehensive list of “cool” things to do
in the Bay Area. Something that we’d update as information became available.
There’s just one problem, there are too many “cool” things. I want to do them
all, but even a small fraction back in the hey day of 2000 had me ever so gentle
fraying at the edges.
A quick list of some upcoming events would go something like this:
- Napa – Wine – April in Carneros - April 17th & 18th, 2004 - Karen can't, I may
- Oakland – Victorian Dance - Gaskells – April 24, 2004 – Dance crazy
- San Jose – SciFicCon - Baycon - May 28th - 31st, 2004 – Otherwise occupied
- Santa Cruz – wine – Santa Cruz Wine Festival – June 5&6, 12&13 - hopefully
- Oakland – Victorian Dance - Gaskells – June 12th – Wine with camping. Dancing.
Hmmm…
- San Diego – SciFicCon - ComiCon - JULY 22-25 – I’ll be home or at Herrick SD’s
100 yr anniversary.
- Oakland – Victorian Dance - Gaskells – October 30th – Dance Crazy
- LA – SciFicCon - Loscon 31 - November 26-29, 2004 – Thanksgiving, I’ll be with
family
- Oakland – Victorian Dance - Gaskells – December 18th – Dance Crazy
Even trying to keep a comprehensive list of all the things that I might want to
do was too much for individuals without their own web crawler. We even lack the
pigeons that Google
uses to carry out their exhausting search of the web.
However, the web is wild and wonderful place. Just because we aren’t the women
to fulfill our reader’s request, doesn’t mean that we can’t point to a few
options.

Convention Listings

Includes a basic list, as well as a simple search by month, state, form.
Also, a good source for information about what’s going on in your local area are
specialty book stores that focus on your obsession. In the S.F. Bay area world
of Science Fiction / Fantasy, that would include:
Borderlands Books – Science fiction, fantasy and horror bookshop in
San Francisco.
Dark Carnival – A thoroughly decadent bookstore, warrens deep in
science fiction and fantasy. Located in Berkeley.
The Other Change of Hobbit – Science fiction and fantasy
bookshop in Berkeley.
Comic Relief – A loverly large comic book store in Berkeley with an
excellent selection.
