Book Signing at Dark Carnival in Berkeley
5.18.02
Lois McMaster Bujold is one of my
favorite authors. I've gratuitously mapped the nexus. I belong to the Bujold
mailing list. I devour her books.
So, it was pretty cool when Lois
came to town for a book signing to promote her new book Diplomatic
Immunity. Karen and I went to Dark
Carnival, which is an independent bookstore in Berkeley for the event.
Now I should say right now that Dark
Carnival is a den iniquitously desirous books. Sci Fi, Mystery, graphic
novels. It's got everything to satisfy my genre needs. We were there a
half hour and we bought four books. Mmmm...books.
Ahem, anyway, we crawled through
the crannies and little nooks until we made it upstairs. Then we showed
ourselves to be total geeks. As we were walking around we heard Lois' voice.
Ah, to be such a fan that you recognize your author's voice.
Then we settled in for the signing.
Chatted a moment, got her sig on three of the latest books and settled
in for some lurking.
For you see, the local members of the Lois list were going to dinner
after the signing with Lois. Squeal. It was a ton of fun.
We went to...you know we should be reviewing the restaurant, but ummm...it
was Japanese, and I'm very finicky. I had rice for dinner. Not their fault,
everyone had great things to say about the food, just not my food preference.
Anyway, we ate and chatted and talked about future books, life, the
internet for about 3 and half hours. Eventually, Lois had to call a halt
because she had to do the whole thing all over again the next day. But
being a heartless fan, I'm just glad Karen and I and twenty other people
were able to sit at the same table with her.
