It's the end of the world as we know
it, but I feel fine.
On 6.23.01, Karen, Gina, and
I were sitting watching the Xena finale. And then at a crucial bit, the
Emergency Broadcast signal went out. We grumbled, what a lousy spot for
a test. Then they announced that due to an earthquake in Peru, they were
instituting a Tsunami watch for pretty much the entire California coastline.
If there was a Tsunami, it would arrive at 2:46 a.m. A Tsunami! Caused
by something half a world away.
Visions
of a wall of water smashing into the coast, destroying all life as I know
it. I live in a low land area. Well, not on the coast, but near water.
What if San Francisco was deluged? What if Berkeley was washed away? What
if...
Then Xena came back on and
watched the end of a cheesy era. After one of the bloodiest episodes of
Xena that I have ever seen, she <Spoilers> dies. For real this time.
No coming back. No last minute save. She stays dead. Course she's still
wandering around as a disembodied spirit. But she is dead.
After which we wondered why
so many deaths this season. To recap:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer |
Buffy |
Dies to save her little
sis |
Dark Angel |
Max's Brother |
Dies to save her life |
West Wing |
Mrs. Lanaham |
Dies in a car accident |
Xena |
Xena |
as previously mentioned,
dead |
Invisible Man |
The water chick |
dies to save Darrien |
Voyager |
future captain |
dies to send everyone
home |
X-files |
the show |
dying still, die already |
Pretty much any show
that I watch (longer than a half hour), someone died. It wasn't like that
in other years. Other years, a couple broken arms, maybe some skinned knees.
I mean really. Heck even this year's Disney movie has a body count.
So,
why is that? Of course, as long as there has been Star Trek, there have
been Redshirts who exist to die and show just how darn serious the situation
is, gall darn it. What's up with killing main characters. Sure J.R. was
shot, but he got over it.
It seems that this year,
my shows wanted to up the ante. Show me that no really, this is serious.
Take me a little closer to the end of the world.
During we went to the weather
channel to find out about this Tsuami thing. We cycled through the East
Coast, the South, and onto us. They announced that the Tsunami would be
a two-foot high wave.
Maybe not the end of the
world after all.
