Dreams of Travel
Travel. Meeting new people. Seeing new things. Creating the connections between moments in time. Here’s how they all influenced each other. Here’s how it all connected. Here’s how it influences us today.

It’s one of the things that compels me to travel.

I picked up the travel bug from Mom. She’s an incredible traveler and has been, not everywhere, but many places. Always calm in a crisis. Interesting to talk to. Knowledgeable.

And for as long as I can remember, mom and I have discussed going to Egypt. Seeing the pyramids. The Sphinx. Sailing down the Nile. Smelling the desert air. Standing under the stars and talking about history and culture and people.

We set a date. Two years after France. Our cousin Lorna’s husband would be retiring from his job as an airline pilot that year. They have a house in Luxor. Friends that we can meet. People that want to meet Lorna’s family.
So, mom and I planned and talked and plotted.

Mom’s boyfriend Gerry wanted to come, which left me with a really expensive single room or Karen as a travel companion.

"Want to go Egypt?"

Squeals and "yes." And "ya, think." And just in case "yes."

And so we were going. We made our reservations for September 2001 in August 2000. We arranged to go to Aswan. We arranged to go on the Jordan extension.

We planned and plotted. Karen and I read books. We read the 7 Pillars of Wisdom. I obsessed on T.E. Lawrence. We read histories and fictions set in historical settings. I read about mythology and decided to write a new version of the Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor (An Egyptian best seller in 3000 B.C.) when I got back.

And we got excited. Karen and I would count months and then days. We packed 22 days early.

Mom, as is typical, didn’t have time for more than mild excitement. Work to be done. But she’d let us spout our research when we got there.

Egypt, Egypt, Egypt. I was so excited, I could taste it. Three weeks traveling. Finally getting to a country in the Middle East. Adding to my world picture. Adding a place that I’ve dreamed of visiting my entire life.
