Action Movie Night 11.03.2000

Explosions! Gunfights! Karate kicks! It was an action bonanza as we went to see Charlie's Angels and a midnight showing of The Matrix. We saw Charlie's Angels at the Emerybay UA in Emeryville (okay seats, decent popcorn, excellent food court next door) and The Matrix at the Sony Metreon IMAX in San Francisco (stadium seating, killer sound, gigantic screen). Both movies kicked ass, but Charlie's Angels was light, fluffy, and totally aware of its own cheesiness while The Matrix is the start of a new mythology for our times (IMHO). In between the shows, we had dinner at Chevy's in Emeryville which was okay in terms of food, and glacial in terms of service.

Nightmare Before Christmas 11.02.2000

There's something in the wind. It feels like tragedies at hand. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a classic holiday film for all ages. We were fortunate to catch a showing at the UC Theater on University Avenue in Berkeley the day after Halloween. In honor of the movie and the season, Crystal donned her fabulous Sally costume while I dressed in classic witch garb. The theater management was appreciative and gave Crystal a discount on admission. It just goes to show that you should always dress up! The theater itself was almost empty, but the popcorn was deliciously buttery and the restored print of the film was worth every penny to see it up on the big screen again.

Quite seriously this is one of my favorite movies.

The stop motion animation is flawless. The visuals are imaginative. The songs are catchy. The score is mournful, melodic, mellifluous, and darn cool.

More than that...hmmm...how to explain. Well, I am a Halloween person. I love getting dressed up for Halloween. It is my holiday. I love the smell of the fall. Turning leaves, scary stories by the fire, hot cider.

Now I realize that this is a "children's" movie. However, I believe the best children's stories are the ones which people can come back to as adults.

Anyway, I'm madly in love with Jack Skellington and really that's all there is to it.
